Sestina: Shadow

He runs through the snow
Trying his hardest to get away, to escape
Every step he takes makes a loud crunch
He can hear the voices behind him, run!
There's nothing he can do to quiet his footsteps...
Then appears the shadow

He feels a cold presence, the dark black shadow
Falling into the snow, the sight chilling his bones, cold hands deep in snow
He closes his eyes in terror, surrounded by the sound of footsteps
Closer, and closer, no escape
He realizes he can’t just sit there, not again, he must run
Feet hitting the snow, and behind him, crunch..crunch…crunch

A glance behind, crunch..crunch..crunch
And all at once, silence, a missing shadow
He stops, no need to run
Its quiet, deceiving, the air filled with falling snow
Uneasy, maybe this was the escape
He walks out into the field this time only surrounded by his own echoing footsteps

Suddenly warm, woken by recognizable footsteps
Not quiet awake, but the turn of a door handle brought him back, then a crunch
Mom moving around his room, damn this was the escape?
Was it a dream? There was some dark reality to this shadow
He had felt it, seen it, the white world of fear and snow
The snow out the window of his room brought memories of cold, the desperation to run
Abruptly, there was a crash, Lights out, run!
He heard the footsteps, his mother’s? no..he knew these footsteps
He pushed open the screen door, how is this happening, feet in the familiar snow
The reality coming back, the loud pounding of running feet, crunch after crunch
He knew his fate, his evil, the shadow
Not again, escape

Trying his hardest to get away, to escape
He can now hear the one voice behind him, run!
No sign of hope, he feels the shadow
There’s nothing he can do to quiet his beating footsteps
Every thump makes a loud crunch
It wasn’t a dream, he’s faced by the shadow, his shadow, in the snow

He can’t see his escape, surrounded by the footsteps
He wants to run, frozen, silenced footsteps
The shadow beckons his soul, becoming one on that cold night in the snow
